When the Romans conquered Britain they brought with them the apple tree. The apple was representative of the goddess Pomona, the goddess of fruit trees. She was known for her great beauty and fertility. Although conquerors, Romans soon accepted Celtic beliefs and the Samhain festival. The two were blended together and the apple became part of the harvest celebration that would become Halloween. This traditional game has to do with divining the future and getting good or bad luck.

Welcome Autumn!

Autumn or Fall is one of the four seasons and it is here since last 23rd September. Autumn marks the transition from warm to cold weather, from summer to winter. In autumn, leaves fall from trees, skies turn grey and we celebrate some festivals you like and enjoy: Halloween, Thanksgiving Day... As a way to say hello to Fall and to welcome it, here are two autumn games with good vocabulary revision.

Well children, summer break is over: the beach, the pool, swimming, barbecues, picnics, summer sports, life outdoors, no work, lots of sleep... Anyway, I know you fancy going to school and you miss your mates, friends and teachers, so WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL EVERYONE!!!

To start with, today I want to offer you a new and very useful tool to learn English this year: Language Guide, a great visual dictionary with many aspects of everyday life: the body, food, nature, clothing, animals... and a lot more!

Click on a category and place the cursor over a picture to see the spelling of the word on the screen and to hear how the word is pronounced. Then, test yourself about the vocabulary displayed by clicking on options and choosing the quiz mode.
