World Health Day
April 7th is World Health Day and as a way to commemorate it, here you are a film. Click over the image below to be directed to BrainPOP site, and see this time, a movie about the human body. The movie is close-captioned but watch the video without subtitles first for comprehension purposes and watch it with subtitles later on. Nutrients and Food Pyramid
Watch this video, listen to it carefully and try to understand as much as you can. You know maybe you need to listen to it several times but remember it is good for you. After that, click on the CC (Closed Captions) button for a transcript and listen again while reading the text.
Finally, just listen (don't read the transcript at the same time) and fill in the blanks:

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY
On March 8th International Women's Day is celebrated. To commemorate it, this nice video gives you some information about some women's achievements and difficult women's life in the past in education, politics... Although there's still a lot to do.
This video also offers you the opportunity to practise your reading abilities. Don't worry about the vocabulary and grammar it contains and you don't know since the main aim is to try to get a global idea of the content. ... Anyway, you can stop the video whenever you need to work on the vocabulary at your own pace.

Shrove Tuesday (Martes de carnaval) is Pancake Day
En el Reino Unido hay una tradición muy querida (a much-loved tradition) de hacer y comer tortitas (pancakes) el Martes de Carnaval (Shrove Tuesday) es decir, el dĆa antes del MiĆ©rcoles de Ceniza (Ash Wednesday) que anuncia los 40 dĆas de ayuno (fast days) -sin contar los domingos, por lo que en realidad son 47 dĆas de Cuaresma (Lent) hasta SĆ”bado Santo (Holy Saturday) antes del Domingo de Resurección (Easter Sunday).
"Shrove" viene del verbo "Shrive" que en antiguo inglĆ©s significa "confesar" (confess) ya que segĆŗn las creencias cristianas (Christian beliefs) habĆa que confesarse antes de entrar en Cuaresma, periodo que commemora los 40 dĆas de JesĆŗs en el desierto (commemorates Jesus' 40 days in the wilderness). Por lo tanto el Martes de Carnaval era para gastar (to use up) aquellos alimentos que no se podĆan consumir en Cuaresma y que podĆan echarse a perder (could go off): los huevos, la mantequilla y el azĆŗcar (eggs, butter and sugar) con lo que estĆ”n hechas las tortitas.
